I've undergone physical therapy in the past at a high end clinic on Manhattan's Upper East Side. A couple of months ago when my primary care physician recommended a small clinic in New York's Chinatown I approached my appointment with considerable skepticism.
I found a small (very small) space and packed waiting room with clients spilling out into the hall. A few anatomical posters on the walls provided the only frills I could see - no fancy weight machines, no mirrors. It had a couple of examination tables in an even smaller room and a couple of other smaller rooms, all filled with clients.
After a short wait, I met with the clinic's director Patrick Chang. He listened attentively to my description of my problem then conducted some tests for strength and range of motion. During this he gave me a running anatomy lesson about the intricacies of the knee, what he wanted to evaluate, and what it meant. Patrick went on to develop an entire rehabilitation protocol that I could do on my own. He told me what to expect and what to look out for so we could either verify the original diagnosis of tendinitis or identify if I needed have an MRI to see if I had something else wrong with my knee (I did, but I'll save that for another post).
I worked with Patrick and his staff over several sessions. I've met few people as knowledgeable and articulate about what they do. He brings a level of intelligence and passion to his work that transforms its surroundings. If you have a sports injury and you live in or near New York, I highly recommend you seek him out at,
